Why Blockchain Technology Will Improve the Hiring Process Blockchain is a developing technology for cryptocurrencies. Without any central authority, it helps maintain an auditable ledger of transaction history on anything purchased. Basically, theres no middle man anymore, its a transparent market for the transaction of goods and services without the time it takes to log transactions and the cost and labor that comes with this. Youre essentially able to see the transactional history of any product through nodes or blocks, and if one were to attempt to falsify a node, it would be rejected immediately. So what your getting is complete transparency when it comes to your money. But, what does this have to with recruiting? Were still a year or two away from seeing the mass adoption of blockchain technology in spaces such as the recruitment industry, but its potential cannot be denied. Heres why: Background checks The concept of blockchain can also be applied to individuals. Something along the lines of a digital ID that gets tracked using the concept of the blockchain, where you are able to see a full history of candidates school transcripts all the way to their work experience. A no-bullshit list of a candidates professional and educational history that has been verified by their employers, universities and more. As you might already know, the traditional background check is far too slow and expensive. Its also a burden on candidates who dont want to waste time filling out forms. So through blockchain technology, you will see significantly less time spent on calling employers to verify backgrounds, as well as less money spent on outsourcing background checking services. And more time spent doing your actual job, which is matching the right candidates with the right jobs. CV validation As recruiters, we find ourselves paying job boards for access to CVs that have been stored in their databases for ages. These CVs might be old and unrepresentative of that candidate. They might even be totally fake, as falsifying what goes into CVs has become too easy to do nowadays. Were constantly seeing people who slip through the cracks, such as Yahoos former CEO, Scott Thompson, who quit the company after less than six months due to accusations that he falsified a computer science degree on his CV. Using the concept of blockchain technology, we would have a real database of resumes, owned by the candidates themselves but where their qualifications and achievements are verified, and accepted, by the companies they had worked for in the past and the schools in which they attended. We will be able to collect a log of a candidateâs history, and much of the time involved with verifying a candidatesâ CVs are eliminated. So theres no falsifying or fakery. Its an authentic display of a candidate achievements, education, and qualifications. Candidate confidence Candidates will also reap the benefits of blockchain technology, as it allows them to apply to roles knowing they are actually qualified for the role, and more importantly without worrying that other candidates might be applying with fraudulent resumes and qualifications. The transparency within this system ensures a level playing field for all candidates. So its in many ways a win-win for both the recruiter, who is getting the most ideal and qualified candidates, but also the candidate, who is confident that they have the right credentials and skills to excel in the role. The potential of blockchain cannot be ignored, but with any type of technological innovation, we cant know for sure how it will affect our businesses. What we know for sure is that we have to keep up-to-date with emerging technologies in order to continue the on-going development of the recruitment space. Technologies like blockchain only make our jobs easier and make us as recruitment professionals more efficient, effective and productive. So I implore you to stay up to speed with blockchain technology so when, or should I say if, its use case becomes more widespread, you are prepared to embrace it.

By that I mean be sure and stay tethered to the job market through whatever means necessary to keep your skills and professional image current. A hiatus from work should not be a hiatus from skill building and work related activity. This may mean temp work, volunteering, going back to school or generally doing whatever it takes to maintain a professional presence.Once a job seeker has worked with a recruiter to find a new job, you wrote that it is smart for executive candidates to rely on the recruiters expertise to negotiate the job offer on behalf of the candidate. Are We Just Too Demoralized to Fight, Or Just Catching Our Breath In a powerful article in the Harvard Business Review called âWomen and the Labyrinth of Leadershipâ authors and researchers Drs. Alice Eagly and Linda Carli explore women, leadership and gender equality, and observe that âsigns of a pause in progress toward gender equality have appeared on many fronts.â They speculate about the causes of this slowing of progress, and indicate: âIt may simply be that women are collectively catching their breath before pressing for more change. In the past century, feminist activism arose when women came to view themselves as collectively subjected to illegitimate and unfair treatment. But recent polls show less conviction about the presence of discrimination, and feminism does not have the cultural relevance it once had. The lessening of activism on behalf of all women puts pressure on each woman to find her own way.â This statement coincides precisely with what Iâve observed in my research with hundreds of working women over these past several years. Iâve noticed that while throngs of women are more than willing to share their stories of traumatic challenge and crisis, they are not at all ready to stand up and fight for what they need and want. When I speak with executive women at Fortune 100 companies, for instance, the depth of despair is palpable about how challenging and out of control their lives are, but the courageous stand-up-and-fight mentality is not present. Theyâre still afraid to speak up. An inspiring friend and colleague of mine, Krista Reiner, who supports authors in expanding their platforms and audiences to the next level, asked me today, âDoes there have to be crisis and conflict in order for change to come about?â I say yes, because change is incredibly difficult and frightening to most people. Significant social change comes only after struggle and conflict. Social change is generated when there is a collective commitment to bringing about a dramatic shift away from what is no longer tolerable, fair, or viable. If you think about yourself and all the women you know, how would you answer these questions? By and large, are we fulfilled with our lives and our careers? If not, are we taking solid, powerful action to change our lives? Do we know what we want, and have a plan to get it? When I went through my worst heartbreaking and crushing crises in the late 1990s up through 9/11, Iâd have to answer the above questions with a resounding âNO!â I was miserable and chronically sick, but despite some feeble efforts here and there, I simply didnât take enough forward-moving action to create any real change at all. Why? Because deep down, I didnât want to do it. I wanted what I had to work for me. I didnât want to give up all that I thought Iâd achieved after years of hard work (money, âsecurity,â self-esteem from being an executive, power, etc.). What I know now is that the very things that held me hostage in a crushing life were the things I was most afraid of giving up. 1 in 5 say low body confidence negatively affects career progression Not only does a low level of body confidence have an impact on everyday things such as mental health, love life and social life, but 20% of people said that it has also held their career progression back, according to new research by Better. The statistics were revealed through a survey of over 2,000 people, to better understand the issue of body image and body confidence which has become so prevalent in recent years due to the constant media images of the âperfect bodyâ. The survey found that women have a lower body confidence than men, with over half of female respondents claiming they are not confident about how their body looks, compared to 36% of men. As a result of this lack of confidence, it was found that 37% of people would avoid wearing certain items of clothing, 22% would not take part in physical activity, 14% would not go on a date and 13% wouldnât go on holiday. Such number highlight the everyday issues people who suffer from low body confidence must face, with 7% saying that they wouldnât even go to a job interview because of it. The biggest impact was seen to be had on 18-24-year-olds however, with a massive 57% of respondents confirming that their mental health took a hit due to their negative perceptions of body image, as well as 35% saying their career progression was also affected. This could perhaps be linked to an increased consumption of images on social media platforms. Body image disorder activist Daren Pritchard said: âIn a day where image is so important, social media perpetuates this and makes it hard to feel confident if you donât conform to 90% of what is sold to you as attractive. Again, when your body type is represented, it becomes a big deal and is often shown as âalternativeâ to the ânormâ which doesnât assist in being inclusive.â Social media influencer and model, David James Seed, who struggled with his own body confidence issues in his youth due to suffering from a structural deformity in his chest called pectus excavatum, said that social media can sometimes misrepresent reality. He said this sort of content could potentially cause some to become insecure and suffer in terms of confidence. He said: âGranted, social media especially, is often a perception of someoneâs life, only showing the âupsâ and rarely the downs (unfortunately) and cannot always be taken as reality. That needs to be understood. Unfortunately, there are influencers who do portray a false reality, false aesthetic, false success and this derives from their own insecurities and financial gain.â
